2010 was quite a year…..

I went to the west coast for the first time and saw the Pacific Ocean (If you haven’t seen the video, check it out). I was a new unemployed graduate registered nurse in a bad economy (in reply to this…please don’t say “I thought there was a nursing shortage”, I might lose it). I had several gallbladder attacks that led to tears and Vicotin and eventually a laproscopic surgery to remove it. I moved into a new place that had more room than I have furniture…I am overjoyed to be out of a mid-rise apartment in the west end. I began a two mile commute to work. LOST ended. I didn’t get my hair cut. I played the Akinator and it guessed the most obscure thing I could think of…… the dog in the Bush’s Baked Bean commercials ……..and I instantly became paranoid.

Most importantly…..Here is what rocked my face off with music, maybe it rocked yours off too:

Last year after much frustration with a certain cable provider in the area, we decided to cancel cable television. Eighty percent of the offerings were channels we didn’t watch. After the farewell, we purchased a digital converter box and rabbit ears. It takes a special talent and patience to memorize the positions of the antenna that get which channel. NBC, FOX — in reference to the television position….antenna base pointed in a southeasterly direction with both ears fully extended at a 45 degree angle. ABC and CBS — balance the base on the edge of the stereo speaker with both ears laying flat and pointing southeasterly or throw the thing upsidedown on the floor ears pointed to the ground with base propped on bookcase. It doesn’t help that we live in condo canyon so mid and hi-rise buildings surround us. The only shows I would turn on were The Biggest Loser and LOST. The Biggest Loser soon dropped off the list and the frustration was only worth watching LOST. The series ended on May, 23 2010 and I have not turned on my basic channel programming since.

The exchange:

The Internet, A Roku box, and a Netflix subscription.

This has worked very well. I know people who hook Netflix up directly to their TV or Playstation 3, ect…but we have been happy with the Roku box. If you aren’t familiar with it, check it out here: ROKU

We get the shows we can’t watch streaming from the Netflix DVD service and the shows we really want to keep current with we are able to purchase through the Amazon interface on the Roku box (MAD MEN just started season 4!)

To keep up with what is up in the streaming world on Netflix and what you can look forward to – the following links can shed some light on that inquiry:

InstantWatcher.com – find the good stuff faster

TheNowhereMan.com Netflix Instant Watch Tracker

In conclusion, paying a monthly Netflix subscription versus the $50 price tag of a basic cable package with the choice of only one provider has saved us money and given us the satisfaction of watching programming with the pausing feature. If you have a good internet connection, and are able to purchase a wireless router and Roku box, the initial investment will pay off in the short run. I don’t miss having cable and quoting the words of Frito Pendejo in Idiocracy the movie : “I like money”.

For those not familiar, to quote the Facebook fan page:

“All fans of Big O and Dukes should by now be familiar with “The Manuever”. The Manuever is when you find yourself craving some fast food and go through the drive thru order your food and eat it in the parking lot preferrably shirtless.”
